Primary Purpose:
Provide counseling services as needed for all grade levels of students.

 

Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Master’s degree in mental health counseling preferred


Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of counseling procedures.
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work with students to manage their behavior
Ability to work with students in an individual or group counseling session.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Provides counseling by responding to student individual needs and concerns.
2. Build relationships with students, parents, and staff.
3. Observe in classrooms in an effort to analyze potential difficulties with students and/or teachers.
4. Provides counseling for student(s) individually or in groups, as appropriate.

5. Use effective counseling techniques in working with students, families, and staff members.
6. Collaborates with campus and district personnel while maintaining confidentiality.
7. Participate in staff meetings.
8. Maintains appropriate documentation.
9. Collaborates with school counselors for the benefit of student progress.
10. Communicate with parents regarding the social, emotional, and behavioral progress of students.
11. Provide professional learning to campus staff members.
12. Participate in appropriate professional learning opportunities.
13. Assists families in accessing community agencies and services for students' progress.
14. Share professional expertise with parents, teachers, and administrators.
15. Participates in the process of referring students to school/district special programs and/or services.
16. Uses an effective referral process for assisting students and others to use community agencies and services.
17. Uses student data to create counseling plans for students.
18. Serves as an advocate for students.
19. Collect and disseminate information about students to other professionals as appropriate.

20. Coordinate school, home, and community resources and refer students, parents, and others to special programs and services as needed.
21. Work collaboratively to advocate for individual students and specific groups of students.

22. Develop and maintain positive working relations with other school professionals.

23. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with representatives of community resources.
24. Improves leadership skills through self-initiated professional development activities.
25. Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in the TEA Code of Ethics for Educators.
26. Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned.
27. Annually establishes and meets performance goals.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment
Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
Environment: Work inside, may work outside
